“Are you queer activists based in Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia? Come join us in the ASEAN Queer Advocacy Week (AAW) this July,” said ASEAN SOGIE Caucus on Instagram, @aseansoegicaucus quoted from VIVA, Wednesday 12 July 2023.
This news immediately drew attention from many parties, including the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). MUI Chairman for Dakwah and Brotherhood Affairs, M. Cholil Nafis asked the police not to issue permits for the activities of the ASEAN-wide LGBT community gathering.
